
The music industry may be going through more agonizing morphs than the T-1000 melting in the vat at the end of Terminator 2, but Prince dependably delivers the most awe-inspiring musical experience on the planet. December was a momentous occasion for his fans, marking the first time in the U.S. he has used the stage designed in the shape of his iconic symbol. I attended the Madison Square Garden performance on December 29 — not quite New Year’s Eve, but what a way to celebrate the transition from the old to the new. And it was a look back to Prince classics that defined the set list rather than his recent creations (the latest CD hasn’t even been released in the U.S.). Hearing those songs with their infectious melodies and rhythms really reminds us of how impoverished today’s auto-tuned, unmemorable pop hits are.
