Maiden U.S.A.

In 1972 I was a cast member in a unique high school drama production created by two students that attempted to convey the frenetic energy of American popular culture. It was part of the wave of innovative, cultural experimentation that characterized the 1960s and 70s. The two creators recorded a soundtrack that weaved together snippets of popular songs, television, and other sources in a breathtakingly fast-paced romp through pop culture. From what I can recall, there was no spoken dialog; everything was acted in sync with the soundtrack, punctuated by brief scenes in which actions were pantomimed in silence. We used our bodies as props: I remember one scene where the other actors transformed themselves into living room furniture, including a TV set with rabbit ears, while another student and I sat on someone’s back and “watched television.” [Read more →]
